CLASS OF CLASSMATE
1923 Fred Hillard

Fred Allison Hillard was born in Eau Claire, Pennsylvania on May 27, 1904 and came to Sebastopol in 1906 with his parents. After graduating from Spring Hill Grammar School in 1919, he attended Analy where he graduated on June 7, 1923. He worked at the Fellers and Hillard Garage for his brother Charlie and brother-in-law Frank Fellers. In December 1927, Fred moved to southern California where he was employed as a Certified Aircraft Welder and machinist by various aviation companies including Thunderbird, Lockheed, Otto Timm, C. H. Quackenbush, Vultee, and Douglas. He met Charles Lindberg when Mr. Lindberg visited with Otto Timm in the early 1930's. On May 15, 1931, Fred and Mary Louise Duncan were married in Burbank. They had two children. During WW II, he worked for C. H. Quackenbush in Glendale where for several years he arc welded the ends on the flap and aileron struts for Lockheed's P-38 aircraft. You can find his initials "FAH" stamped on virtually every strut on those P-38's now located in aircraft museums. In 1950, he returned to Sebastopol, which he had always called "God's Country". In 1953, he moved into his newly constructed adobe home on Barnett Valley Road. He worked for Weeks Hardware as a pump and well repairer until 1953 when he accepted a position as a machinist with Optical Coating Laboratory in Santa Rosa. He started his own machine shop in 1962 performing custom machine work. He loved poetry and could recite, by memory, for hours the poems of Longfellow, Thoreau, Service and many others. Fred took his life on July 27, 1987 at his home on Barnett Valley Road.
